Colas USA is a vertically-integrated materials and road construction company. Colas USA has seven subsidiary companies that operate throughout United States. Colas’ original site focused on the products and services the parent company provided. Mention of the companies under Colas’ umbrella was minimal. Colas wanted a new site that focused more on the capabilities of their subsidiaries and emphasized the wide range of career opportunities available throughout all Colas companies.

Process

The project began by reviewing the sitemap of the existing Colas USA website. Many pages including Products, Services, Research & Innovation, Projects, and Customers were removed in favor of a condensed sitemap that focused on the subsidiaries. The goal of the site was to provide basic information about each subsidiary, and then direct users to the subsidiary’s website for more detailed information.

Once the sitemap was finalized, I started by creating a low-fidelity wireframe sketch, which I used as a rough guideline for a high-fidelity design prototype created in Sketch and Invision. The first iteration of the design focused heavily on blog content, which was to be supplied by Colas’ internal magazine, Crossroads. After some internal discussion, Colas USA decided to remove all blog-related information from the site. I updated the designs accordingly—the final result can be seen below.
